All about Jaguars
Jaguars are the only members of Panthera. They are the third largest cat species in the entire world. They are the largest of all the cats in the South America. They are found particularly in the Amazon basin. Here are a few things that you may like to know about Jaguars.
Species: They are the largest cat species in the western hemisphere. They have a deep chest. They are comparatively very short with a muscular body and limbs.
Habitat: Jaguars prefer to stay in dense rainforests which are humid. They are known for avoiding open grasslands. They also avoid dry forests.
Appearance: They are the largest cats available in the western hemisphere. They have a broad and heavy head but short legs and tail. The coat of the jaguars is tawny-yellow. On the side of the throat and belly they appear little whitish.
Diet: They prey on peccaries and deer. The ground-dwelling birds are their prey as well. They also eat sea turtle eggs. They are often found roaming on the beaches to find and eat the eggs that are deep buried in the sand.
Reproduction: The reproduction of Jaguars can take place anytime in the year. The sexes locate each other with the help of roaring “calls” and urinary scent mark. The pair separates after mating. The cubs are born blind. Each cub weighs approx 2 pounds. They later start giving company to their mother for the purpose of hunting.
Jaguars have a life span of approx. 20-22 years. They are perfect human eaters!
